In the context of the Fotofestival, the award-giving ceremony of the prestigious Cultural Prize of the German Photographic Association (DGPh)
is on 3 October 2009. This year’s honouree is
Wolfgang Tillmans, who became known for his portraits of the youth, techno and gay scene
in the 1990s.
Tillmans has changed the imagery of contemporary photography profoundly. Ever since the mid 1980s, his work has been dissolving the
boundaries between applied photography and art. The 3rd Fotofestival 2009, entitled IMAGES RECALLED – BILDER AUF ABRUF, deals with
various aspects that also loom large in Tillmans’ work. Working with found material (e.g.
Soldiers – The Nineties), with archives of
images and texts (e.g.
Truth Study Center), or the issue of the body pervade all of his oeuvre. In the festival’s catalogue, there will
be an extensive conversation between Esther Ruelfs and Wolfgang Tillmans.
The award-giving ceremony will be on
3 October 2009 at
6 pm in
Heidelberger Kunstverein.
Address of welcome: Michael Sieber, ret. state secretary, chairman Heidelberger Kunstverein
Laudation: Prof. F.C. Gundlach, Hamburg
